A Dignity that Nothing Could Remove
By Regina, on mission in the Ukraine in 2012-2014
Pan Petro is my inspiration whenever we walk into his room. When he was 13 years old he stepped on a land mine which exploded, leaving him with only one working arm and two shriv-eled legs. One half of his face is disfigured, and he was blinded by the incident as well. Yet there is a dignity about him that nothing could remove. The first time I met him, I was amazed at his words, “I am so grateful for each day God has gifted me.” He spends his days moving his fingers over his rosary beads, praying to Our Lady. One day, when we came into his room, Pan Petro was the image of weakness. He was slumped against his pillows and his voice was slurred and unclear as he prayed. But when we asked him if he was tired, he replied, “With God, I am never tired.” Why? I wonder. What makes him rejoice in God in such a deep way? What gives him this strength to love his simple and difficult life? So many would turn against God, blaming Him and even begging for death, but Pan Petro, in his quiet dignity, accepts all.
