Letting Him Lead Us

By Lorenza V. Missionary in Peru

That day, Lucy and I went on visits together. We had an idea of the people we wanted to visit but the Holy Spirit had other plans. We knocked on several friends’ houses but they were either not there or just about to go out. After a while, I felt like we both surrendered to the Holy Spirit and let Him lead us more.

We started walking towards the hospital close to our house when Lucy saw a woman she had met somewhere else. She was very tired, but took us to see where she lived so we could visit her another day. It was one of the first houses I have seen that does not actually look like a house, but rather is a pile of wooden logs on top of each other. We realized we needed to go back there.

Once we were out of the quinta, I saw Marcela next to a tienda, taking a break. We started talking and she asked us if we could walk with her. Along the way, she found carton boxes she wanted to take home to be able to sell them later. Even though walking with her to her house was not part of our plan, it was pretty clear that God wanted us right there with her. That way, also, we could know where she lives.

Once we arrived, I noticed a stark mold smell and what looked like a storage unit filled with a lot of stuff. She pulled out some stools to sit outside and while she was doing that, I realized she had little to no space to walk around since she had a lot of things inside of her house. It was heartbreaking. However, she did not seem super bothered and she did not complain. As we talked, she told us about her long days that sometimes feel like they do not end because it is hard for her to fall asleep.

Amidst the very strong scent and the worry I felt for her health, I was reminded of the reason why I came to Peru. The last two months have been full of other grace-filled moments as well as moments of dying to self, but in every single one, there was an invitation to witness the Lord’s presence.
